2019 African Ranger Awards Nominations Submission Opens

2019 African Ranger Awards Nominations Submission Opens.

Africa is the world’s richest continent in terms of wildlife, yet this treasure trove of biological diversity has been suffering from rampant illegal hunting. At present, the African elephant population is declining at a rate of 38,000 per year. Animals such as black rhinos and gorillas are also endangered.

Every year, many rangers sacrifice their lives in battles against armed poachers and illegal loggers. A survey in 2016 showed that in Africa, 82% of rangers have faced mortal danger on the job, and over 60% of the rangers were attacked directly by poachers. In 2015 alone, there were at least 107 rangers killed during their patrols. Between 2006 and 2016, over 1,000 patrollers sacrificed their lives in the service of protecting wildlife. These courageous folks should be recognized and achievements celebrated.

In 2017, Jack Ma, the founder of Alibaba Group and co-chair of Paradise International Foundation, initiated an award programme to support 500 wildlife rangers in Africa, aiming to recognize the critical role that frontline rangers play in conservation. The 2018 African Ranger Awards honored 50 rangers working in 17 countries across Africa. A selection of the award winners attended the first annual African Ranger Awards ceremony in Cape Town, South Africa on August 7th, 2018.

The African Ranger Award seeks to raise awareness in the world about the need to conserve Africa’s wildlife, emphasizing the critical role that front-line rangers play in conservation. By sharing those real-life stories, this award aims to help stem the current decline in populations of Africa’s wildlife.

This year, the Foundation will continue awarding outstanding African rangers. Same as last year, up to 50 rangers will be selected as award winners and each of them will receive a grant of $3,000.

Our founder and CEO, Fred Swaniker will be a member of the panel of judges who will determine the winners of the awards.

Nominations for candidates are still ongoing so you can submit an online nomination for the 2019 African Ranger Awards here. The submission deadline is May 15th, 2019.
